Echo repeats the sound of a deck every half, three quarters, one or two beats of the track's tempo. Each repeat is quieter and a little darker than the one before, so it stays subtle.
- Load a track with a known tempo and play it.
- Switch on ECHO under the deck (on the Performance screen, or in the Transition Lab's Decks section).
- Choose the delay in beats and set how loud the repeats are.
- To echo a track out: fade it down, then switch ECHO off. Switching off stops sending the deck to the echo, and the repeats already in it ring out and fade away.
Tip. The echo is taken after the deck's fader, so the repeats carry on when the deck is faded right out or stopped.
Tip. Like loops and filters, the echo does not touch the faders, so you can use it while an automix or a set is playing and the mix carries on.
The Live Director can add a subtle echo-out by itself: as the leaving track goes, its sound is sent to the echo for a short stretch, so the exit trails off smoothly instead of just fading. It does this only in club, studio and radio mixes with a long blend and a bass swap, only when the leaving track is clearly measured as having no vocals at that point, and never more than one effect in a mix. Switch it off with Live Director effects on the Director's plan card (and the same choice applies when you plan a set).
The other effect the Director may use is an intro hold: when the arriving track has a short intro and the next part of it (the build or the drop) would start before the mix ends, the last two or four bars of the intro are looped until the mix ends, so the drop arrives with the arriving track alone. It is used only when the intro has no voice in the looped bars, and never together with the echo-out in the same mix. If you set a loop on the arriving deck yourself, the Director does not touch it.
Tip. If you have the echo on by hand on the leaving deck, the Director leaves it alone. The effect is deliberately quiet: rate the mix and the Director learns whether you like it.
The delay follows the deck's tempo when you change it with the tempo slider.
